5 Signs Your Business Has Outgrown Break-Fix IT Support

Raj PatelJune 2, 20265 min read

Break-fix IT support, calling a technician only when something goes wrong, feels cheaper right up until it isn't. For a lot of growing businesses, the real cost isn't the invoice for the repair; it's everything that stopped while you waited for someone to show up.

The first sign is frequency. If your team is submitting the same kind of ticket every few weeks, such as a slow server, a printer that won't hold its configuration, or a recurring login issue, that's not bad luck. It's a symptom of infrastructure that needs proactive attention, not another one-off fix.

The second is your growing dependence on one person who 'just knows how everything works.' When that person is on vacation or leaves the company, institutional knowledge about your network walks out the door with them.

The third sign is security exposure. Break-fix relationships rarely include the unglamorous, ongoing work of patching, monitoring, and updating, the work that actually prevents incidents rather than responding to them.

The fourth is budget unpredictability. Reactive IT spend is inherently lumpy: nothing for months, then a five-figure emergency. A managed plan converts that into a flat, forecastable line item.

The fifth is simply growth. What worked for eight employees on a single office network starts to strain at twenty-five, and strains badly past fifty. If any of this sounds familiar, it's worth having a conversation about what a managed plan would actually look like for your business.
